5 Questions with - Fabiana Paolini

This week our '5 Questions Series" takes us to talk with Fabiana Paolini.  Fabiana is a branding and marketing specialist. Fabi shares with us her experience of leaving the ad agency world and going out on her own.

1. When did you make the big decision to start your own business? What inspired you? What scared you?

I had always wanted to have my own business because it’s important for me to dedicate my time to  my family and career. I remember being at the University of Miami (where I graduated) and telling my friends that I would get a job at an ad agency to gain experience and then open my own studio. I worked at Leo Burnett as an art director until I resigned and began freelance work, specializing in brand and design. I moved to Venezuela where I had a successful career and then moved to Miami about a year ago. I had to start almost from scratch because I had to look for new clients and build my business in a different way—now, mostly online.

2. What has surprised you most about this process?

In the process of starting my business in a new market, I was surprised about how important online presence is. Taking my business online has completely changed everything for me. Also, investing in your business is amazing. I have learned that in order to be big, you have to play big. That means hiring people to do certain things for you, investing in advertising, and participating in coaching programs that can help your business grow.

3. What do you wish you’d known before starting your business? Any advice for future small business entrepreneurs?

I used to be afraid because there was so much competition out there. I knew that there were other designers better than I was and charging less. When I realized that people didn't only come to me for my design abilities, but because of who I am as person, that made all the difference. I realized that not only my design style made me unique but also my stories, my personality, and the way I treat clients. So, my advice is, don't worry so much about the competition. Focus on how you can shine by being yourself.

4. Where do you go in Miami when you’re looking for inspiration?

I love going to Wynwood. But the truth is,the best way for me to be inspired is to relax as much as possible: going to the beach and disconnecting is excellent for that. I love going to Hollywood beach.

5. What modern local group or business do you look up to?

In terms of groups, I'm involved in the Miami chapter of the National Association of Professional Women, which is pretty cool. Other businesses that I look up to? Delirio Fresh Co in Doral is a restaurant I love going to because of their great branding and what they offer. I also love Brain Freeze ice cream because I feel their branding and experience is super cool!
