1. When did you make the big decision to start your own business? What inspired you? What scared you?

While I worked as a social media director for an advertising agency, many of my ideas were shut down with a lot of no’s that hindered my creativity. I knew that I had more to give; so, I decided it was time to do it my own way.   I had been working since my son was born and once he turned four, I had a renewed desire to become more available for him. I don’t mind the flexible schedule, working on nights and weekends, because it allows me more time with my son.

What scared me was the unpredictability of income. It was also the idea of trusting my own abilities, in a completely fearless way… a way that I never had before. Before this, I never planned on becoming an entrepreneur with pure faith in myself.

2. What has surprised you most about this process?

Throughout this process, I’ve realized how incredibly cool the community of women entrepreneurs are in Miami. Since I have decided to work with women, I now realize how different men and women approach entrepreneurship. In addition, what surprised me was how the spiritual the process has been for me. If you are not in full self-confidence of your spirit and abilities, then it isn’t going to work; You have to actively push against the idea of not believing in yourself.

3. What do you wish you’d known before starting your business? Any advice for future small business entrepreneurs?

I wish I had been aware of the different small communities of women entrepreneurs that were already working together. It took me a while before finding and becoming a part of these local sub-communities. There is a very collaborative nature to these Miami women… If I would have known how fun it was, I would have started sooner!

4. Where do you go in Miami when you’re looking for inspiration?

I am big extrovert; So, being around other people inspires me. Any kind of networking event, especially our own event Brand New Mornings, gives me a lot of inspiration. It’s always fun to meet and be around all of these amazing people while doing amazing things and being positive toward others.

5. What modern local group or business do you look up to?

There are so many. One of my favorites stores, the Archive Gallery, I walked in and loved it right away. I even told the woman I was going to be friends. In addition is a group of girls who started “Good Gift Box” for people who want to create custom-made or pre-packaged gift boxes for someone special. Another group is the four women of Lemon City Tea, who brew and create their own teas with a Miami twist.

Thank you for sharing Gaby!!
