Every week we will be featuring a local business person sharing their insight into running a small business.  This week, we are talking to Mark Baker-Lovett.  Mark ... or Baker to some ... is a local artisan and shop owner.  You can find him every Saturday selling his amazing handmade jewelry and one-of-kind clothing  at the Upper East Side Farmer's Market.  Mark is an active member of the MiMo Biscayne Neighborhood Association and is heavily involved in turning the historical neighborhood of MiMo in a vibrant, walkable village.  You can follow Mark's adventures around the neighborhood on his Facebook page MiMo Occurrences. Mark is originally from Texas but has lived in Miami for close to 20 years... Question 1: What made you decide to start your own business?IMG_7750

Mark Baker-Lovett - I have been in business for myself since I was 22 years old.  I love the independence of it all!

Question 2: What is the best part of being your own boss?

MBL: One word, FREEDOM

Question 3: What has been your biggest challenge in opening your own business, and how did you overcome it?

IMG_8397MBL:  Keeping afloat during downturns in the economy, so when it is slow you must increase your production.  Materials plus labor equals wealth.

Question 4:  What is the best piece of advice you can give to someone who is looking to go out on their own?

MBL:  Be consistent with the product you create and how you brand yourself.

Question 5: What is your favorite spot in Miami?

MBL: Wherever I am!
